THE SPLICE

Jesus spoke these things; and lifting up His eyes to heaven, He said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify Your Son, that the Son may glorify You, even as You gave Him authority over all flesh, that to all whom You have given Him, He may give eternal life. This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. I glorified You on the earth, having accomplished the work which You have given Me to do. Now, Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was. I have manifested Your name to the men whom You gave Me out of the world; they were Yours and You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word. Now they have come to know that everything You have given Me is from You; for the words which You gave Me I have given to them; and they received them and truly understood that I came forth from You, and they believed that You sent Me. I ask on their behalf; I do not ask on behalf of the world, but of those whom  You have given Me; for they are Yours; and all things that are Mine are Yours, and Yours are Mine; and I have been glorified in them. I am no longer in the world; and yet they themselves are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep them in Your name, the name which You have given Me, that they may be one even as We are. While I was with them, I was keeping them in Your name which You have given Me; and I guarded them and not one of them perished but 1the son of perdition, so that the Scripture would be fulfilled. But now I come to You; and these things I speak in the world so that they may have My joy made full in themselves. I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. I do not ask You to take them out of the world, but to keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth. As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they themselves also may be sanctified in truth. I do not ask on behalf of these alone, but for those also who believe in Me through their word; that they may all be one; even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me. The glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are one; I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved Me. Father, I desire that they also, whom You have given Me, be with Me where I am, so that they may see My glory which You have given Me, for You loved Me before the foundation of the world. O righteous Father, although the world has not known You, yet I have known You; and these have known that You sent Me; and I have made Your name known to them, and will make it known, so that the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them.” And He said to them, “When I sent you out without money belt and bag and sandals, you did not lack anything, did you?” They said, “No, nothing.” And He said to them, “But now, whoever has a money belt is to take it along, likewise also a bag, and whoever has no sword is to sell his coat and buy one. For I tell you that this which is written must be fulfilled in Me, 2‘AND HE WAS NUMBERED WITH TRANSGRESSORS’ ; for that which refers to Me has its fulfillment.” 3They said, “Lord, look, here are two swords.” And He said to them, “It is enough.” He went forth with His 4disciples over the ravine of the Kidron, to the Mount of Olives where there was a garden, a place called Gethsemane , in which He entered with His disciples. And He said to His disciples, “Sit here while I go over there and pray; Sit here until I have prayed.”

  1. son of perdition: Judas Iscariot is the son of perdition. Did Judas go to hell? Yes. ↩︎
  2. AND HE WAS NUMBERED WITH TRANSGRESSORS: from Isaiah 53:12 ↩︎
  3. They said, “Lord, look, here are two swords: Jesus had no need for weapons, against beast or man (see Matthew 26:52-53). These “swords” were actually small or more like daggers. The Greek word used to describe them is machaira which means “a short sword or dagger”. These were multi-functionary, not just for defense. Jesus did say “…for all those who take up the sword shall perish by the sword.” Matthew 26:52. But He also said in Luke 22:36 “…whoever has no sword is to sell his coat and buy one.” In Luke 22:36, Jesus was speaking figuratively. Jesus is telling them to provide for themselves as they go out into the world for Him, like Paul did (2 Corinthians 11:9) and as all ministers of Christ should do today, for the same reason Paul did way back then. The only “sword” or weapon that the Christian is to wield is the word of God, Ephesians 6:17. ↩︎
  4. the disciples:It is assumed that only the 11 remaining inner circle disciples were with Jesus in the Garden. It is very possible that this is the case, but Jesus had more than just the immediate 12 disciples traveling with Him during His entire ministry, including at this time. There were also several women from Galilee, including His own mother, following along as He traveled, taught and performed miracles (Luke 8:1-2, 23:55, Mark 15:40-41, John 19:25-27). It is possible that the women were present at the Passover meal (although if they were there, they would have been serving at table and eating separately). It is possible that, if the women were at the Passover meal, that they went along to the Garden, too, but the Bible doesn’t say anything about that. The Bible does mention women lamenting and mourning Him on the road to Golgotha where He was crucified, which possibly included the ladies that followed Him (Luke 23:27) and then several women who followed Him are specifically mentioned at the cross (Matthew 27:55-56, Mark 15:40-41,Luke 23:49; John 19:25), at His burial (Matthew 27:61, Mark 15:47; Luke 23:55-56) and then, at His resurrection (Matthew 28:1-10, Mark 16:1-11, Luke 24:1-11; John 20:1-18).  ↩︎
